Overview

Kehlen is a commune in the canton of Capellen, in central Luxembourg. It is located about 20 km west of Luxembourg City and has a total area of 7.94 km2. The commune includes the villages of Kehlen, Keispelt and Olm.

History

The name Kehlen comes from the Latin word "Cella", meaning cell, referring to a small monastery. The first known mention of Kehlen dates back to the 12th century, when it was part of the County of Luxembourg. Throughout the centuries, it was under the rule of various lords and dukes and during the 19th century, it became part of the newly formed Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Geography

Kehlen is located on the Alzette River, which runs through the commune from north to south. It is situated in the valley of the river, surrounded by wooded hills. The highest point in the commune is Buergbierg, which has an elevation of 443 meters.

Demographics

As of January 1, 2022, the population of Kehlen was 4,787, making it one of the smaller communes in Luxembourg. The majority of the population are Luxembourgers, with Portuguese, French and Belgian nationals also represented.

Climate

Kehlen has a temperate oceanic climate, with mild winters and cool summers. The average temperature in January is 1°C, while the average temperature in July is 18°C. The commune receives an average of 800 mm of precipitation per year, with the wettest months being May and June.
